I'm from America, but I've never left the Eastern time zone, so I could certainly use the description. (About the only thing I know about South Dakota is roughly its location relative to the other states.)

Not because she is ill, depressed, or undernourished, as any farm wife in the Dakotas would have a right to be, but because she "ain't one for work". :P I am really thoroughly unimpressed by the way the author keeps judging and putting down the Wubbers for no clear reason I can see.
I can see "ain't one for work" as meaning she's physically weak and her body isn't adapting to the strenuous lifestyle as well as expected. I admit that's probably an overly-charitable interpretation.
