Okay I found this SUPER INTERESTING because I loved this book as a kid and have been afraid to reread since in case the Suck Fairy had visited it. I'm glad to hear it's actually relatively good, minus the colonialism and occasional insensitivity!

(the floating island being sunk, and the trip home in the glass snail, were the bits that stuck with me the most clearly. Mostly the floating island.)
